Rail closure boosts diesel use

Opponents of the Coos Bay rail line abandonment have said the loss of rail service hurts local business. Less concern has been expressed about the waterways and animal habitats that could be damaged if the rail line is salvaged for scrap.

The U.S. Surface Transportation Board wants to change that. Over the next four weeks, it is accepting comments about the current and potential environmental damages caused by the rail line abandonment.

Kayak accident injures one woman

A woman was injured Saturday when her kayak capsized on the Rouge River east of Gold Beach.

The unidentified woman’s kayak became hung up on a rock in Tacoma Rapids, approximately five miles up river from the Foster Bar boat ramp. She was pinned between her kayak and a rock for  30 to 45 minutes, before another boater helped get her free, a Curry County Sheriff’s Office press release said.
