Scholarships are available for botany enthusiasts

The Coos County Master Gardener Association will honor a Coos County high school graduate to further education in a plant-related field.

Fields of study may include agriculture, biology, botany, biochemistry, entomology, forestry, horticulture or landscape design. A merit scholarship of up to $2,000 will be awarded for the 2009-10 academic year. The Coos County Master Gardener Scholarship Committee will determine the number and amount of awards annually, and will be made during the year preceding the award. To be eligible, applicants must: Be a Coos County high school graduate, have an official copy of high school diplomas or an official college transcript if applicable, have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better, have an acceptance letter to a college or university, have two current, dated and signed letters of recommendation (one of them must be from an instructor) and complete an interview with the scholarship committee.

Applications can be downloaded from extension.oregonstate.edu/coos, or be received by calling 572-5263. E-mail applications will not be accepted. Completed applications may be mailed to Coos County Master Gardener Scholarship Committee, Attn: Jane Mitten, OSU Extension Office, Ohlsen Baxter Building, 631 Alder St., Myrtle Point, OR 97458. Application deadline is Feb. 28.
